As we’re already two months into 2024, the year is flying by fast! However, before we set off exploring further into the future, it's worth dedicating some time to take a considered rewind through the rich and dynamic history of flight training. This journey through the past offers us a valuable perspective that can help us understand the formative years of flight training and the potential future trajectories it may take. After all, over the past 115 years, aviation has progressed significantly from the modest beginnings in the Wright Brothers' era to the sophisticated and advanced training programs we see today, fundamentally shaping the landscape of structured aviation education around the world.

The Birth of Flight

The inception of flight, a milestone in human history, can be traced back to the visionaries, the Wright Brothers. In the year 1910, they established one of the earliest flight schools in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama, only an hour or so from Blue Skies Above Flight School. They then set the stage for what would later evolve into a comprehensive system of aviation education. This pioneering institution later blossomed into a vibrant hub for aviators, producing notable figures like Hap Arnold and Thomas DeWitt Milling who have left indelible marks on the field of aviation.

The global demand for trained pilots during the turbulent times of World War I led to the establishment of a multitude of flight schools across the U.S., with the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) in 1939 playing a particularly crucial role in meeting this need.

In the aftermath of WWI, pilot training underwent significant transformations, marked by a series of milestones such as the inception of aeronautical engineering programs at esteemed institutions like MIT in 1926. The sector saw an unprecedented wave of growth and diversification with the emergence of a plethora of flight schools across the country.

The changing global economy also influenced the cost of obtaining a Private Pilot Certificate, reflecting the growing popularity of aviation education. This era witnessed a vibrant mix of demographics and diversity among student pilots, showcasing the increasing accessibility and universal appeal of aviation education.

No account of aviation history is complete without acknowledging the contributions of iconic aviators either. Orville Wright, after founding the Montgomery Flight School, became an instructor and played a significant role in shaping the early days of flight training. Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932, continues to inspire generations with her courage and determination. Similarly, Chuck Yeager's groundbreaking feat of breaking the sound barrier in 1947, exemplified the daring spirit pushing the boundaries of flight.
